Ah, thanks for replies. For some reason I thought that each m.2 slot is an individual PCI-e slot, like normal x4, x8, x16 slots, not combined with SATA ports. I'll probably go with two PCI-e NVMe SSDs and raid1 them.

Integrated ports are those that are part of, or directly wired to, the motherboard. Internal integrated ports are used to connect devices inside the system unit. External ports may be connected to the motherboard directly (integrated) or by circuit boards that are inserted into slots on the motherboard. It is often possible to add new external.

The only thing I can think of is whether you can physically fit another drive within your computer?
My guess is that you are read article at a 3.
You should also make sure you have a link cable that is available for where you are going to place the drive.
If you dont know which case you have thenas suggested, open it and start looking.
Desktop sata drives are 3.
Some cases have mounting points for 2.
They are also small enough to fit almost anywhere and some people just set them or tape them onto the inside bottom of the case.

M.2 cards with a B Key interface can only fit into a B Key host slot, and likewise for M Key. But cards with a B+M Key design can fit in either a B or an M host slot, since they have gaps for both. Check your laptop or motherboard specification to see which one is supported.

The front of the motherboard contains ports that all of the internal components connect to. A single socket/slot houses the CPU. Multiple slots allow for one or more memory modules to be attached. Other ports reside on the motherboard, and these allow the hard drive and optical drive (and floppy drive if present) to connect via data cables.

The PCI Express standard is one of the staples of modern computing, with a slot on more or less every desktop computer made in the last decade. But the nature of the connection is somewhat nebulous: on a new PC, you might see a half-dozen ports in three or four different sizes, all labelled β€œPCIE” or PCI-E.”
